  • By Birth: Automatically granted if born in Luxembourg to at least one parent who was also born in Luxembourg.
  • By Descent: Citizenship can be claimed if you have a Luxembourgish parent, grandparent, or great-grandparent (if born in Luxembourg before 1900 and registered by 2025).
  • By Marriage : A foreign spouse of a Luxembourg citizen may apply after 3 years of marriage and at least 1 year of residence in Luxembourg.
  • By Naturalization: Available after 5 years of legal residence, including 1 consecutive year before applying, plus language and civics tests.
  • Special Exception – Dual Citizenship Allowed: Luxembourg has allowed dual citizenship since 2009. You do not have to renounce your current nationality when applying.

Note:A specific Article 89 “recovery” pathway has a deadline of December 31, 2025 to complete the process if already started, but the main ancestry citizenship pathways (Article 7, Article 23, and combinations) do not currently have this deadline and remain open
